What Are Dewclaws?

dew clawsMost dogs are born with dewclaws (extra nails) on two and sometimes all four paws.  Responsible breeders will have a vet remove these before your pet is three days old.  If your dog still has dewclaws, it is your responsibility to have them removed at the same time that you have your pet spayed or neutered.  These extra claws are a groomer’s nightmare because they tend to be more sensitive than the other nails therefore making the dog despise the nail trim experience.  They can also be a nightmare to the owner and the pet, because left untrimmed, can curve around and grow back into the pad.
